When to list on eBay vs Poshmark vs Depop vs Mercari
Each platform wants a different item. Here's the decision tree for picking where to list every find.
Listing the same item on every platform sounds great in theory. In practice, it’s a tax on your time. Each platform wants a specific kind of item — list there, ignore the others.
Here’s the decision tree.
eBay — when sell-through is the deciding factor
eBay has the most buyers, the deepest sold-comp data, and works for almost anything. Default here unless another platform is clearly better.
Best for: electronics, sneakers, vintage clothing, collectibles, anything with a brand or model number that buyers search for.
Avoid for: athleisure (Lulu, Outdoor Voices), trendy women’s fast fashion. Those move faster on Poshmark.
Poshmark — when the buyer wants the brand more than the deal
Poshmark’s audience pays slightly more for trendy, on-brand items. Lululemon, Free People, Anthropologie, Madewell.
Best for: women’s clothing, athleisure, contemporary brands, items where brand recognition is the value.
Avoid for: electronics, men’s stuff, anything older than 2015 (the buyer demo skews younger).
Depop — when the buyer is Gen Z
Depop is fashion-forward, vintage-heavy, Y2K-everything. The buyers are 18–28 and they’re hunting aesthetic.
Best for: Y2K, vintage tees, distinctive 90s pieces, streetwear (especially women’s), anything photo-worthy.
Avoid for: plain basics, anything that doesn’t pop in a photograph.
Mercari — when speed matters more than price
Mercari is faster than eBay (no auctions, just buy-it-now) and the buyer pool is broader than Poshmark. Lower fees too.
Best for: items where you want a quick sale, household goods, kids’ stuff, smaller-margin flips you don’t want to babysit.
Avoid for: high-end items where eBay’s buyer pool would pay more.
The decision tree
Is it an electronic, sneaker, or collectible? → eBay.
Is it a women's contemporary brand? → Poshmark.
Is it Y2K, vintage tee, or streetwear? → Depop.
Otherwise: → Mercari (if you want speed) or eBay (if you want best price).
That’s it. Pick the lane, list once, move on.
